Katarina began ice-skating at age five. Soon, her talents became apparent and she was invited to Karl-Marx-Stadt's special school. In this school, she was introduced to the coach of her choice, Jutta Muller. Her breakthrough year was in 1982, when she placed second in the World Championships in Copenhagen. Her graceful and elegant style caught the attention of everyone, and from that point forward she began to dominate the competition. Olympic victory Katarina Wit took home gold in the women's ice skaters during the Sarajevo Winter Games 1984 after a highly competitive and intense contest. A more competitive contest afterward, she was awarded her gold medal. In fact, she did not win the free skating contest but she did win gold on the basis of results during the compulsory short and figure programme. Witt became the first woman to take home a gold medal in both the men's and women's figure-skating competitions in the past since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame Witt, who had achieved success in the world of film and television as an actress before returning for figure skating, competed in the Lillehammer Winter Games 1994. While she did not win a single medal, she was awed by fans even with finishing seventh. Witt was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame on the 15th of April, 1995.
